-mæli, n. (1) private talk or conference; (2) common talk (var þat allra manna einmæli);
-mælingr, m. one meal only; hafa einmæling, to eat one meal a day;
-mælt, adv. one a day, one meal a day (eta, drekka einmælt);
-mæltr, pp. unanimously said (þat var einmælt, at).
einn, card. numb. and pron. (1) one; e. skal við e. eiga, one shall fight against one; e. ok e., one by one, one at a time, singly; (2) as ord. numb. = inn fyrsti (Urð hétu eina, aðra Verðandi, Skuld ina þriðju); (3) the same, one and the same (váru sveinarnir up fœddir báðir í einu þorpi); allt í eina leið, all in one way; e. . . ok, the same as (í einu herbergi ok hinn); allr e., the very same, quite the same (þat er allt eitt ok himinn); allt at einu, nevertheless, for all that (þó at þú þjónaðir illum, þó var hann allt at einu þinn herra); (4) indef. one, a certain (e. vetr, e. dag, eitt kveld); e. vinr Þóris, a certain friend of Th.; before numbers, about, some; einar fimm þúsundir, some five thousand; einir. . aðrir, some. . others (einir tóku dúka ok aðrir rekkjublæjur); e. ok ýmiss, one and another (einar ok ýmissar þjóðir); (5) after a negation, any; né eitt, not anything; (6) gen. pl. 'einna' used in an intensive sense; einna manna bezt, best of all (single) men; einna verst, by far the worst; einna sízt, by far the least, least of all; engi er einna hvatastr, no man is superior to all others; (7) alone (Guðrún skyldi ein ráða fyrir fé þeirra); láta konu eina, to desert or divorce one's wife; with gen., hann varð e. sinna manna, he was separated from his men; if put after the noun 'einn' generally denotes only, but; segja þetta prett einn, to call this a mere trick; vín eitt, wine only; var þat (handklæði) raufar einar, all in holes, mere tatters; fáir einir, only a few; e. sér or sér e., quite by oneself, alone (hann var e. sér); e. saman, e. samt, quite alone; kona eigi ein saman, not alone, with child; at eins, only, but; eigi at eins, not only; því at eins, only in that case; údauðr at eins, merely not dead, all but dead, barely alive; at einu = at eins.
ein-nefna (-da, -dr), v. to appoint.
einn-hverr (ein-hver, eitt-hvert), indef. pron.; except in nom. and acc. sing. masc. and neut. ein- is generally indecl.; (1) some, some one; einnhvern dag, some day; eitthvert sinn, einhverju sinni, sometime, once; as a noun (meðan einnhverr várr búandanna er lífs); (2) as an intensive with superl. ágætastr maðr einn-hverr, one of the very foremost men; (3) each, each one, usually in two words (ór þeirra fjórðungi sem ór einum hverjum öðrum).
einnig, einnug (= einn veg), adv. in the same way, likewise, also; á e. (=á einn veg), in the same manner.

-ráðinn, pp. having made up one's mind, resolved (í e-u, til e-s, upon); hafa einráðit at gera e-t, to have made up one's mind to do a thing;
-ráðr, a. self-willed;
-reikull, a. inclined to roam about alone;
-ræði, n. self-willed;
-rœða, f. private conference;
-rœnligr, a. strange, odd;
-rœnn, a. singular in his behaviour.
eins, adv. alike, in the same way; e. ok, as (bar e. víð ok í Valþjófsstöðum); as if (e. ok væri hann með öllu óttalauss); allt e. ok, just as (allt e. ok rakkar metja með tungu); allt e. = allt at einu, see einn 3; at eins, see einn 7.
ein-samall, a. alone (rare) = einn saman.
ein-seta, f. (1) solitude; (2) solitary life, hermit's life; (3) hermitage.
einsetu-bróðir, m. anchoret, recluse, hermit;
-klefl, -kofl, m. hermit's cell;
-kona, f. hermitess, anchoress;
-lifnaðr, m. the life of an anchoret, hermit's life;
-ligr, a. pertaining, to einseta;
-líf, n. = -lifnaðr;
-maðr, -munkr, m.-bróðir.
eins-hverr, indef. pron. = einnhverr.
ein-skapan, f. the right to fix one's own terms;
