Greetings and welcome!

The success of the Northvegr web site has truly become the result of group effort. Through the generous donation of time, skills and materials, the Northvegr site has grown to be one of the best repositories of information for pre-Christian Northern European history, faith and culture.

Our goals have always been to make this great resource freely available to anyone with an internet connection. You can count on Northvegr to continue with that mission in the future.

Would you like to be a part of the team that makes this happen? We are always looking for volunteers who are interested in donating their time and skills to help us make this site even better. There are a number of ways you can do this. If you would be interested in volunteering, take a look at the various projects listed below. If you find one that interests you, feel free to contact us for more information, at any time: info@northvegr.org

Please include in the subject line of your e-mail the following letter sequence: “NESP”

This should ensure a quick response to queries or offers that deal with the list of projects on these pages.

Transcribing texts

info@northvegr.org

We would like to have your help to transcribe texts for inclusion in the Northern European Studies Texts section. We have a number of books that we can scan into just about any graphic file format you might prefer, from which you can proofread with OCR software or type in by hand. You can also work on transcribing books in your own possession.

This is a list of the graphic file formats that we can create according to your preference:

Gif,  JPEG,  TIFF,  PNG and BMP. Other formats may be available as well. Please contact us for more information.

List of book available now for transcription. Click here.

¤   The Roman Scandinavia Project:

This is the project that continues the work of Roman Scandinavia: Primary Sources, a work created by Eric Anctil and generously donated to the Northvegr Foundation.

The goal of Roman Scandinavia is to transcribe primary source texts as evidence of what Mediterranean civilizations of antiquity and the early medieval (Vendel) periods knew of Northern European geography and cultures, in their original languages as well as modern English translations for non-specialists.

¤ The Old Icelandic Grammar Project:

Help us make Rasmus Rask's, A Grammar of the Icelandic or Old Norse Tongue, available on the World Wide Web to the public.

¤   Cleasby-Vigfusson Project:

We are now continuing a project to proofread the HTML texts for An Icelandic-English Dictionary, which was published in 1874 by Richard Cleasby and Gudbrand Vigfusson. It is the most comprehensive and authoritative dictionary on Old Icelandic.

The files (TIFF, PNG and HTML) are available at Sean Crist's Indo-European Language Resource site. The files have already been scanned so the task now is to proofread them. Anyone who has scanned text that includes Icelandic characters knows that an above average amount of proofreading is required. The files that we proofread will be posted here at Northvegr. They will also be made available to Sean and anyone else who would like to have access to them.

If you would like to help us proofread the HTML and make this great resource available on the Internet, contact us at: info@northvegr.org . We are working to have a low bandwidth version of the page images available here at Northvegr as we have for the Zoëga dictionary.

¤   Other Books Available For Transcription:

We have number of books that are waiting to be transcribed. We can send you graphic files in just about any graphic format, from which you can scan and proofread with OCR , or type out directly. Click here for a list of books that are available. This list will be updated as we acquire new texts, so if you do not see anything that interests you, check back once a week and reload the page in your browser.

Translation of texts

info@northvegr.org

The Northvegr Foundation is always in need of more translators and proofreaders of translations.  Thus, if you are fluent in reading/writing Modern English in addition to one or more languages besides Modern English, we can use your assistance. If you are able to read/write a language that is not a modern language (i.e. Middle English, Old High German, et cetera), that knowledge is also very welcome here!

¤   Förnaldar Sögur Translation Cooperative:

This is a cooperative project to make the first complete English translation of the Förnaldar Sögur corpus of sagas and thattr. For more information see: /media/mmc1/world_faiths/www.northvegr.org-relative-n/translation/fornaldar.html

¤   The Grimm's Teutonic Mythology Translation Project :

Grimm's treasure house of Germanic folklore is filled with quotes from source texts in various languages. Unfortunately, unless the reader is a scholar in Germanic languages, many of the quotes will not be understood. The Grimm's Teutonic Mythology Project has, as its goal, the translation of these quotes. If you have the skills to translate the many quotes that are in modern and old Germanic languages, and would like to help out, please do feel free to contact us any time. More information can be found at: /media/mmc1/world_faiths/www.northvegr.org-relative-n/lore/grimmtran.html

HTML

info@northvegr.org

We have a fair amount of books and texts that have been transcribed and now need to be converted into HTML so that they can be displayed at the Northvegr site. If you have the skills required to work in HTML, and would like to help, feel free to contact us at any time and we can set you up with the guidelines and material that needs to be coded.

PDF

info@northvegr.org

If you can construct PDF files, you can help us with one of the major goals of the Northvegr site: to convert all the texts from the Northern European Studies Texts site into PDF documents, which will be offered for free download. If you would like to help us with this goal, please feel free to contact us at any time and we can set you up with the guidelines and source texts. It should be noted that you do not have to be able to actually make PDFs to help with this project. You only need a word processor such as MS Word or Word Perfect. info@northvegr.org

One does not have to be a scholar to contribute. One only needs to have an interest in one or more of these projects and be willing and able to contribute. The results of these projects are posted on the Northvegr.org web site, which is freely viewable to any and all who have access to the Internet, and all contributors are credited by name.
