Chapter 48


The Marriage Of Eirík And Gunnhild

        Eiríkr Haraldsson var at fóstri með Þóri hersi Hróaldssyni í Fjörðum; honum unni Haraldr konungr mest sona sinna ok virði hann mest. Þá er Eiríkr var tólf vetra gamall, gaf Haraldr konungr honum fimm langskip, ok fór hann í hernaði; fyrst í Austrveg, ok dvaldisk í þeiri ferð fjóra vetr. Eptir þat fór hann vestr um haf ok herjaði um Skotland ok Bretland, Írland ok Valland, ok dvaldisk þar aðra fjóra vetr. Eptir þat fór hann norðr á Finnmörk ok alt til Bjarmalands, ok átti þar orrostu mikla ok hafði sigr. Þá er hann kom aptr á Finnmörk, þá fundu menn hans í gamma einum konu, þá er þeir höfðu enga sét jafnvæna. Hon nefndisk fyrir þeim Gunnhildr, ok sagði at faðir hennar bjó á Hálogalandi, er hét Ösurr toti. "Ek hefi hér verit til þess," segir hon, "at nema kunnostu at Finnum tveim, er hér eru fróðastir á Mörkinni; nú eru þeir farnir á veiðar, en báðir þeir vilja eiga mik, ok báðir eru þeir svá vísir, at þeir rekja spor sem hundar, bæði á þá ok á hjarni; þeir kunna ok svá vel á skíðum, at ekki má forðask þá, hvárki menn né dýr, en hvatki er þeir skjóta til, þá hœfa þeir. Svá hafa þeir fyrirkomit hverjum manni, er hér hefir komit í nánd, ok ef þeir verða reiðir, þá snýsk jörð um fyrir sjónum þeira, en ef nökkut kvikt verðr fyrir sjónum þeira, þá fellr þat dautt niðr. Nú meguð þér fyrir engan mun verða á veg þeira, nema ek fela yðr hér í gammanum; skuluð þér þá freista, ef vér fáim drepit þá."
