asunder; sjaldan veršr vķti vörum, the wary man will seldom make a slip;
e-m veršr žörf e-s. one comes to be in need of; (3) to happen

to be there; varš fyrir žeim fjöršr, they came on a fjord; v.
į leiš e-s, to be on one's path, happen to one; (4) v. brottu,
to leave, absent oneself (žeir sį žann sinn kost lķkastan at v. į brottu);
v. śti, to go away (verš śti ok drag ongan spott at oss); to perish
in a storm from cold (sumir uršu śti); žeim žótti honum seint heim v., they
thought that he was long in coming home; (5) with acc. to lose;
kvįšust okkr hafa oršit bęši, said that they had lost us both; (6) followed
by a noun, adj., pp., adv., as predicate, to become; žį veršr žat žinn
bani, it will be thy death; v. glašr, hryggr, reišr, to
become glad, sad, angry; v. daušr to die (įšr Haraldr inn
hįrfagri yrši daušr) with participles; ok varš ekki eptir honum gengit, he
was not pursued; verša žeir ekki fundnir, they could not be found; blóš
hans varš ekki stöšvat, the blood could not be staunched; žeim varš litit
til hafs, they happened to look seaward; impers., e-m veršr bilt, one
is amazed; Kolbeini varš ekki fyrir, K. lost his head, was paralysed;
with adverbs; hann varš vel viš skaša sinn, he bore his loss well, like
a man; jarl varš illa viš žetta, the earl was vexed by this; (7)
with infin., denoting necessity, one must, needs, is forced, obliged
to do; žat veršr hverr at vinna, er ętlat er, every one must do the work
that is set before him; žar er bera veršr til grjót, where stones have
to be carried; verš ek nś flżja, now I must flee; (8) with
preps., v. af e-u, to come to pass (var um rtt, at hann skyldi leita
fara, en eigi varš af); varš ekki af feršinni, the journey came to nought
was given up; veršr žetta af, at hann tekr viš sveinunum, the end was
that at last he took the boys; starf ok kostnašr varš af žessu, trouble
and expenses arose from this; livat veršr af e-u, what becomes of; hvat
varš af hśnum mķnum, what has become of my cubs?; v. at e-u, to become
(v. at undri, undrsjónum); veiztu, hvat žér mun v. at bana, knowest thou
what will be the cause of thy death?; v. at engu, to come to nothing;
v.į, to come on, happen; žvat sem į yrši sišan, whatever
might happen later on; e-m veršr į, one makes a blunder, mistake (žótti

(honum varš žar eptir geit ok hafr); v. fyrir e-u, to meet with (v.
fyrir goša reiši); to forebode (v. fyrir stórfundum); v. fyrir e-m,
to be in one's way, as a hindrance
