Chapter 39


The Discovery of Iceland

        Svá er sagt, at menn skyldu fara ór Noregi til Færeyja; nefna sumir til Naddoð víking; enn þá rak vestr í haf, ok fundu þar land mikit; þeir gengu upp í Austfjörðum á fjall eitt hátt, ok sásk um víða, ef þeir sæi reyki eða mökkur líkindi til þess at landit væri bygt; ok sá þeir þat ekki. Þeir fóru aftr um haustit til Færeyja; ok er þeir sigldu af landinu, féll snær mikill á fjöll, ok fyrir þat kölluðu þeir landit Snæland. Þeir lofuðu mjök landit. Þar heitir nú Reyðarfjall á Austfjörðum, er þeir höfðu at komit. Svá sagði Sæmundr prestr enn fróði.
        Maðr hét Garðarr Svavarsson, sœnskr at ætt; hann fór at leita Snælands at tilvísun móður sínnar framsýnnar; hann kom at landi fyrir austan Horn et eystra; þar var þá höfn. Garðarr sigldi umhverfis landit, ok vissi at þat var eyland. Hann var um vetr einn norðr í Húsavik á Skjálfanda ok gørði þar hús. Um várit, er hann var búinn til hafs, sleit frá honum mann á báti, er hét Náttfari, ok þræll ok ambátt. Hann bygði þar síðan er heitir Náttfaravík. Garðarr fór þá til Noregs ok lofaði mjök landit. Hann var faðir Una, föður Hróars Tungugoða. Eftir þat var landit kallat Garðarshólmr, ok var þá skógr milli fjalls ok fjöru.
