þá-leiðar, -leiðis, adv. that way, thus, = á þá leið.
þána (að), v. to thaw, = þiðna.
þás, conj. when, = þá es, þá er.
þáttr (gen. þáttar, pl. þættir, acc. þáttu), m. (1) a single strand of a rope (skar í sundr átta þáttuna í festinni); fig., þættir ættar minnar, strands of my race; (2) section, division, esp. a section of law (kristinna laga þ.); (3) short story (Þ. Orms Stórólfssonar).
þefa (að) , v. to smell, sniff.
þefaðr, pp., iila þ., ill-smelling, foul.
þefan, f. smelling, smell.
þef-góðr, a. sweet-smelling.
þefja (þafða, þafðr), v. to stir, thicken; remains only in the pp.; hann hafði þá eigi þafðan sinn graut, he had not cooked his porridge thick.
þefja (að), v. (1) to smell; (2) to emit a smell (min fœzla þefjar betr hverjum ilm).
þefjaðr, pp. smelling (vel þ).
þefka (að), v. to smell, = þefja.
þef-lauss, a. smell-less, vapid.
þefr, in. (1) smell; (2) taste.
þega, f. present, gift (dýrlig þ.).
þegar, adv. (1) at once, forthwith (hón gekk þ. til hans); þá var hann þ. fjarri, then he was already far away; þ. á unga aldri, when quite young; þ. í stað, at once; Þ. bar merkit þ. eptir honum, immediately after him; (2) þ. er, þ. es, þ. sem, þ. at, as soon as; (3) = þ. er (þ. Skapti vissi þetta, gekk hann til búðar Snorra goða).
þegars = þegar er, as soon as.
þegat, adv. = þangat, þagat.
þegja (þegi, þagða, þagat), v. to be silent (R. þagði við); þegi þú!, be silent!; with gen., þegi þú þeira orða, keep silence from such words, speak not so; þ. yfir e-u, to keep silent about, conceal (kvað hana hølsti lengi hafa, þagat yfir svá góðri ætt).
þegn, m. (1) thane, franklin, freeman, man; Mörðr kvaddi oss kviðar þegna níu, M. summoned us nine franklins on this inquest; hann lézt eigi vita, hverr þ. hann væri, he said he knew not what person he was; þ. ok þraell, freeman and bondman, all men; ek ok mínir þegnar, I and my men; (2) a good (liberal) man (svá er sagt, at hann sé ekki mikill þ. við aðra menn af fé sínu); (3) liegeman, subject (þeir játuðu skattgjöfum ok gerðust konungs þegnar).
þegn-gildi, n. the weregild for a 'þegn' 3.
þegnskapar-maðr, m. liberal man.
þegn-skapr, m. (1) honour; leggja (fela) e-t undir -skap sinn, to swear upon one's honour, pledge one's honour to a thing; (2) liberality, generosity (honum eyddist fé fyrir-skapar sakir); reyna -skap Flosa, to put Flosi's generosity to the proof;
-skylda, f. the duty of a thane towards his liege lord, allegiance (játa e-m -skyldu).
þeima, old dat., sing. and plur., = þessum, to this, to these (á þ. bœ, á þ. mánuðum).
þeimon, þeimun, all the = þeim mun (þ. harðara).
þeims = þeim es, þeim er.
þeir (þær, þau), demonstr. pron. pl. they, those, answering to the sing. 'sá, sú, þat' ' and 'hann, hón, þat'; (1) the neut. pl. 'þau' as collective for a masc. and fem.; síðan gengu þau (sc. Njáll and Bergthora) inn bæði; (2) 'þeir' is frequently used before an adv., or a prep. with its complement; þeir norðr þar, those there in the north; þeir fyrir austan árnar, those east of the rivers; (3) pleonast. before
