A Professor at the University of California at Berkeley in English and Germanic Philology from 1916 to 1955, when he retired. In 1956, he was recalled for four more years.
His childhood was spent in Westfield , MA.
He was survived by his widow, Josephine and a brother, Clarence Brodeur, an artist residing in New Haven, CT.
He earned Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from Harvard University.
Dr. Brodeur was known for his research into and writings about the heroic legend of Northern Europe. He is Probably best known for "The Art of Beowulf." He also wrote "The Altar of the Legion" and translated the "Prose Edda" from Icelandic to English.
The Swedish government awarded him the Royal Order of Vasa in 1944 for his contributions to American-Scandanavian friendship. He received and honorary Doctor of Letters of Law degree from the University of California in 1960.
