Chapter 33
The Death of King
Gorm
Þess
er eigi getit, hvar hann hafði herbergi um nâttina ok lið hans; en Gormr
konungr réð ekki í þetta, svá at menn fyndi, er sonr hans hafði sagt honum;
en konungr drakk, meðan honum sýndisk, ok fór síðan at sofa; en um náttina
eptir, er menn váru ór höll farnir til svefns, þá ferr Þyri dróttning
til með menn sína, ok lét ofan taka allan hallarbúning, en síðan lét hon
tjalda í staðinn svörtum reflum þartil er altjölduð var höllin; fyrir
þvi gørði hon svá, at þat var hygginna manna ráð í þann tíma, þá er harmsögur
kómu at eyrum mönnum, at segja eigi með orðum, ok gøra þá á þann veg,
sem nú lét hon gøra. Gormr enn gamli reis síðan upp þann morgin, ok gekk
í hásæti sitt, ok settisk niðr; ok ætlaði at taka til drykkju, ok leit
á hallarveggina ok búninginn, er hann gekk utan eptir höllinni, ok þar
nú í hásæti, sem áðr var frásagt. Þyri sat í öðru öndvegi ok hásæti hjá
konunginum. Konungr tók þá til orða ok mælti: "Þú munt þessu ráðit
hafa, Þyri!" segir hann, "er höllin er á þessa leið búin."
"Fyrir því þykkir þér þat líkligra, herra?" segir hun. "Þvi,"
sagði konungr, "at þú vill svá segja mér fall Knúts sonar míns."
"Þú segir mér nú," sagði dróttning. Gormr konungr hafði staðit
upp fyrir hásætinu, er þau tóku þetta at rœða, en nú settisk hann niðr
hart, ok svarir øngu, ok hné upp at hallarvegginum, ok lét þá líf sitt.
En síðan er konungr þaðan í braut borinn, ok fœrðr til graptrar, ok var
haugr orpinn eptir hann at ráði Þyri dróttningar; þá hafði hann konungr
verit yfir Dönum nær tíu tigu ára.
