Were gone to sleep; l. í sótt, to
fall sick, take to bed (from illness); l. á e-t, to fall
upon (of robbers, beasts of prey); l. á, to arise (mun
sá orðrómr á l., at); l. fyrir, to take rest,
lie down (lögðust þá fyrir bæði menn ok
hestar af úviðri); fyrir l. um e-t, to give it up; l. or l.
til sunds, to swim (Grettir lagðist nú inn á
fjörðinn); l. í hernað víking, to set out on a
freebooting expedition; l. út, to set out into the wilderness
(as a highwayman); l. e-t eigi undir höfuð, not to lay it under
ones pillow, not to neglect or forget it; eigilagðist
mjök á með þeim brðrum, they were not on
good terms; lítit leggst fyrir e-n, one has but a poor
destiny (lítit lagðist nú fyrir kappann, því
at hann kafnaði í stofureyk sem hundr); recipr., l. hendr á,
to lay hands on one another; l. hugi á, to take a liking for
each other; l. nær, to run close up to one another (of two
boats); l. niðr fé, to slaughter sheep (haf frjálst þat, sem þú hefir niður lagt af fé váru).
leggja-, gen. pl. from leggr;
-brot, n. pl. pieces of bone in a broken leg;
-bönd, n. pl. leg-straps.
leggr (-jar, -ir), m. (1) hollow bone (of
arms and legs); (2) leg; komast á legg, to grow up
(þá vóru synir hans vel á legg komnir); (3)
stem of a plant; (4) shank of an anchor; (5) shaft of a
spear.
leg-kaup, n. burial-fee.
leg-orð, n. lying with a woman.
legorðs-sök, f. a case of leg-orð.
leg-ró, f. rest in bed;
-staðr, m. burial-place;
-steinn, m. tombstone.
legu-nautr, m. bed-mate, mess-mate.
leið (-ar, -ir), f. (1) way, road
(á skóginum vóru tvennar leiðir); þar er
leiðir skildi, where the roads parted; (3) course (on the
sea); segja leið, to pilot; (4) adverb. phrases, koma e-u til
leiðar or á leið, to bring about; skipast á
betri l., to change to a better way; á þá l., in
this wise, thus; fram á l., á l. fram, further,
all along; afterwards, for the time to come (5)
levy; leiðar at biðja, to call out a levy.
leið, f. a local assembly (in the Icelandic Commonwealth).
leiða (-dda, -ddr), v. (1) to lead,
conduct (Ólafr konungr leiddi Kjartan til skips); l. upp skip,
to drag a ship ashore; (2) fig., l. augum (sjónum), to
behold; l. hugum, to consider; l. huga at e-u, to mark,
note; l. spurningum at um e-t, to inquire; l. getum um e-t, to
guess at a thing; l. ástum, to love; l. af e-u, to result
from; (3) gramm. to pronounce (því at hann leiddi eigi
svá sem tíðast er); (4) to bury, lead to the
grave (Steinarr leiddi hann uppi í holtum).
leiða (-dda, -ddr), v. (1) l. e-m e-t, to
make a person loathe or avoid a thing; (2) refl., leiðast e-t (acc.),
to loathe, get tired of (leiðist manngi gott, ef getr);
impers., e-m leiðist, one feels discontented (man honum leiðast,
ef deildr er verðrinn); mér leiðist e-t, I am tired of
(leiðist mönnum opt á at heyra).
leiðangr (gen. rs), m. (1) levy,
esp. by sea (including men, ships and money); bjóða út
leiðangri, to levy men and ships for war (bjóða út
leiðangri at mönnum ok vistum); hafa l. úti, to make a sea
expedition; (2) war contribution, war tax.
leiðangrs,-far, n. levy-ship;
-ferð, f. war expedition;
-fólk, n. levied folk;
-gørð, f. raising a levy;
-lið, n. levied army;
-maðr, m. levied man.
leiðar-dagr, m. the day on which the leið was held;
-morgunn, m. the morning of that day.
leiðar-nesti, n. viands;
-steinn, m. loadstone;
-stjarna, f. lodestar;
-sund, n. strait, passage;
-vísir, m. guide;
-víti, n. a fine for default in respect of a levy.
leiðar-völlr, m. = leiðvöllr.
leiði, n. (1) leading wind, fair wind
(þeir fengu gott l.); (2) tomb (Svíar grétu yfir l.
hans).
leiði, n. irksomeness.
leiði-fífl, n. a fool to be led about.
leiði-gjarn, a. wearisome.
leiði-ligr, a. hideous.
leiðindi, n. pl. (1) loathing, dislike; leggja
l. á við e-n, to take a dislike to a person; (2) an
unpleasant thing.
leiðing, f. leading, persuasion.
