Roman Scandinavia - Primary Sources

Roman Scandinavia
Primary Sources

An online source on ancient Scandinavia for ancient & medieval historians
Editor: Eric Anctil (2000-?)
URL: http://www.anctil.org/users/eric/history/source/

FOREWORD

The purpose of this online source book is to study the land of Scandinavia and its indigenous peoples from a classical and medieval perspective using a selection of Greek and Latin primary sources in English translation. The source materials take a broad thematic approach to its subject matter, however its chronology corresponds roughly from around 800 BCE to about 800 CE. Some of the inherent themes covered in the works comprise the following: women & gender, economics (trade), society & culture, religion & morality, politics & law. The ultimate goal of this online source book is for scholars and students using the Internet to reach a new understanding of Scandinavian geography and culture from the Mediterranean (Continental European) outlook.
The parameters of this source book do not include a study of the barbarian invasions (military history), but rather what the Romans knew about their customs and their Scandinavian homelands. Sweden (Skåne, Bornholm, Öland, Gotland) and Denmark (Jutland, Zealand) will figure more prominently than Norway (Rogaland, Vestfold), Finland, or Iceland due to their closer proximity to Roman Germania.

The impetus for this project came from the following sources of inspiration:
Theodor Mommsen
Andrew N. Sherwood
Bertil Häggman (NPMP)
Teubner
Loeb Classical Library (LCL)
Roman Civilization: Selected Readings (vols. 1-2) by Naphtali Lewis and Meyer Reinhold (1990)
De etnografiske kilder til Nordens tidlige historie by Allan A. Lund (1993)

Wassail,
Eric Anctil
