If you are familiar with LATEX, you'll probably be able to read the Tutorial somewhat faster, since many LYX ideas are just LATEX ideas in disguise. However, LYX does have idiosyncrasies1.1 you'll want to learn about. Even if you don't feel like reading the rest of the Tutorial, you should definitely check out Section , which is specifically written for experienced LATEX users.
