LYX for L^ATEX Users

If you don't know anything about L^ATEX, you don't have to read this section. Actually, you might want to learn about L^ATEX, and then read this chapter. However, many people who begin to use LYX will be familiar with L^ATEX. If you are such a person, you may be wondering if LYX can really do everything L^ATEX can do. The short answer is that LYX can do pretty much everything L^ATEX can do in one form or another, and it definitely simplifies most parts of writing a L^ATEX document. Currently, there may be some annoyance in converting old L^ATEX documents and in a couple other areas, but later releases of LYX will get rid of these problems.

Because this is just a tutorial, we are only going to mention things that new LYX users will most likely be interested in. In the interests of keeping the Tutorial short, we will give only minimal information here. The Extended Features manual, specifically the Secrets of the L^ATEX Masters chapter, has a great deal of information on differences between LYX and L^ATEX, and how to do various L^ATEX tricks in LYX.
