What is UPG?

      UPG is an acronym that stands for Unsubstantiated Personal Gnosis or Unusual Personal Gnosis. This is used to describe personal experiences with the gods and goddesses that are not backed up by the existing lore but neither are they contradicted. In general I would think that if a particular UPG is not contradicted in the lore, and the person who experienced the UPG is very well grounded in the lore then it should be considered. So the purpose of this page is to present various UGP's that have been experienced that pertain to Freyr.

Hildisvini and GullinborstiHildisvini and Gullinborsti are two different animals. Both are golden boars. They were twins who were gifted to twins so to speak. Hildisvini belongs to Freyr's sister Freyja and Gullinborsti belongs to Freyr.

Barn Owls My Personal Gnosis of Frey came during a meditation. I was standing at the foot of Yggdrasil, it was dusk and I was waiting for something or someone - a message from the Deities. Then, a Barn Owl landed on a branch just in front of me and I knew he was Frey's Avian Totem. Consider this;

Barn Owls protect the crops in the field from rodents and the Harvest stored in the Barn. Frey is Lord of the Harvest.

Barn Owls have wings, they are capable of taking messages from earth to the heavens and back - a Priestly figure. According to the Eddas, Frey is High-priest to the Deities.

Barn Owls are the only owl that is diurnal, that is active during the day and night. Frey is known to be a solar deity and known to be Lord of those in the Barrow, the eternal darkness.

Barn Owls capture their prey in their talons.

Since Frey has given away his sword, he is known as the Lord of Hand-to-Hand Combat.

All Owls are known to be totems of wisdom.(Don't forget, Frey is the counselor of Kings and High Priest to the Deities. This requires wisdom!) But only the Barn Owl has a heart-shaped face, thus representing the balance of wisdom and emotion, of wisdom and intuition... Frey is, above all things, the Lord of Balance. It's true; he is the God of Sun and the fertilizing Spring Rain. The Lord of new life in the fields and the Lord of the Barrow. The Lord of Frith and Hand-to-Hand combat, etc...

The Barn Owl has been invaluable to me as a totem and representative of Frey, helping me to learn and understand more about my Patron Deity. I love him completely!

Peace & Good Harvests to you all!
