Chapter 31

The Fall of King Knut

Þess er viðgetit eitthvert sinn, at eitt haust kom Haraldr eigi til Danmerkr, sem hann átti vanda til, at hafa þar vertsetu, ok hafði hann herjat um sumarit í Austrlönd; en í annarri sögu er þess getit, at Gormr konungr sendir menn til Holtsetulands, at bjóða Knúti syni sínum til sín at jólum; ok nú er at því kom, þá ferr Knútr heiman ok hans föruneyti, ok hafði hann þrjú skip, en svá hafði hann tilætlat um ferðina, at hann kom í Limafjör' atfangadag jóla ok síð dagsins; ok þat sama kveld kømr þar Haraldr, bróðir hans, með níu skipum eða tíu; hann var kominn ór Eystrasalti, ok hafði hann þar legit í víking um sumarit. Nú verðr Haraldr varr við, at þar var Knútr fyrir, bróðir hans, þrim skipum, ok minnisk nú á þokka þann allan, er gørzk hafði milli þeirra brœðra, ok biðr nú menn sína herklæðask, ok brjóta upp vápn sín; "ok skal nú," segir hann, "til skarar skríða með okkr Knúti bróður mínum." Knútr verðr ok varr við tiltekju Haralds bróður síns ok fyrirætlan, ok vill hann verjask, þótt þeir hefði lið minna; taka þeir vápn sín, ok búask til varnar, ok eggjar Knútr líð sitt. Nú leggr Haraldr at þeim öllum megin, ok lýstr þegar í bardaga með þeim brœðrum, en þat var jafnt jólaaptan sjálfan, er þeir börðusk; en svá lýkr bardaga, at Knútr fellr þar, ok allt lið hans eðr nær því, þvíat Haraldr neytti þess, er hann hafði lið miklu meira.
