ryðjandi (pl. -endr), m. challenger.
ryðr, m. rust, = ryð.
ryðugr, a. rusty, = ryðgaðr.
rygr (gen. rygjar, dat. and acc. rygi; pl. rygjar), f. lady, housewife (rygr heitir sú kona, er ríkust er).
ryk, n. dust.
rykkja (-ta, -tr), v. (1) to pull, jerk (hann ætlar at r. honum fram á stokkinn); (2) to run (en er hón sér þat, rykkir hón fast undan).
rykkr, m. pull, tug, wrench, jerk.
rymja (rym, rumda, rumit), v. to roar, scream (rymjandi rödd).
rymr, m. roaring, noise; randa r., clatter of shields.
rysking, f. a rough shaking.
ryskja (-ta, -tr), v. to shake roughly; refl., ryskjast við e-n, to scuffle with one (þar myndi ekki þykkja við kollóttan at r.).
rytja, f. a vile, shabby thing.
rytningr, m. = rýtingr.
rýja (rý, rúða, rúinn), v. to pluck the wool off sheep (r. gemlinga).
rýma (-da, -dr), v. (1) to make more roomy (r. garð sinn); r. varðhaldit, to make the confinement less severe; r. fyri (viz. öllu fólki) veginn, to clear the way; with dat., r. á honum fjötrinum, to loosen his fetter; (2) r. e-u brott, to drive away, sweep off = ryðja e-u brott (rýmit brott þongum harmi af yðru brjósti); r. til e-s, to clear, prepare the way for = ryðja til e-s; (3) to clear away, break up (þú skalt r. fjalir ór gólfinu); (4) to quit, leave; r. land, to leave the country, go into exile; r. e-t fyrir e-m, to leave (a place, seat) that it may be occupied by another (kallar Skapti, at Þ. skyldi r. höfnina fyrir honum ok leggja ór læginu); (5) to withdraw, absent oneself (skulu þér allir eta hér inni, en ek mun r.); r. fyrir e-m, to cede, give up one's place to one (hann rýmdi fyrir herra Ásgrími); r. brott, to go away; (6) refl., rýmast, to become roomy, widen; r. tekr dalrinn, the dale widens; impers., rýmist, there is more room (ef rýmdist í kirkjunni); rýmdi Grettir þá fram á gólfit, then G. stepped forth on the floor.
rýna (-da, -t), v. (1) to talk, converse (þau rœddu ok rýndu); (2) r. eptir e-u, to pry into.
rýnendr, m. pl. friends, counsellors.
rýrr, a. poor, weak, insignificant.
rýta (-tti, -tt), v. to grunt, squeal, of swine (rýtandi ok emjandi).
rýtingr (-s, -ar), m. dirk, dagger.
ræði, n. rule, management.
ræðis-maðr, m. steward, manager.
ræfr, n. roof, = rjáfr, ráfr, ráf.
ræingi (pl. -jar), m. a good-for-nothing fellow.
ræki-ligr, a. to be rejected.
rækindi, n. pl. refuse, unclean matter (hann kvazt aldri etit hafa r.).
rækja (-ta, -tr), v. to refuse, reject.
rækr, a. rejected, abhorred, abominable (r. ok rekinn frá guði).
ræna (-ta, -tr), v. to rob, plunder, to deprive (one) of (a thing).
ræningi (pl. -jar), m. (1) robber; (2) vera r. e-s, to be robbed or plundered by one (þú munt vilja vera r. Ljóts sem margir aðrir).
ræsa (-ta, -tr), v. (1) r. e-t á hendr e-m, to bring a charge against one (eigi var mér þess ván, at þú mundir þetta r. á hendr mér); (2) impers., ræsir draum, a dream proves true, comes to pass.
ræsir, m. chief, king (poet.).
ræsta (-sta, -str), v. to clean, sweep (konur skulu r. húsin ok tjalda); r. (stífldan lœk, to clear out a (dammed-up) brook.
ræxn, m. knot (tók hann língarn ok reið á ræxna, sem net er síðan).
rœða (-dda, -ddr), v. (1) to speak; r. um e-t, to speak about (konungr rœddi fátt um þessi tíðendi fyrir mönnum); r. við e-n, to speak, talk with one (þá rœddi Höskuldr við Hrút); r. e-t, talk about, discuss (ef þú rœðir þetta mál fyrir konungi); (2) refl., rœðast við, to converse about (hann sagði henni allt þat, er þeir höfðu við rœðst).
rœða, f. speech, talk (konungr reiddist mjök við rœður þessar).
