absol. or with double dat., s. e-m e-u (ţví mun ek s. ţér um ţetta, er satt er); (2) to answer (in a suit); s. máli fyrir e-n, to answer for one in a suit; (3) s. fyrir e-n or e-t, to answer (be answerable, responsible) for (ek skal ţar fyrir s.); s. skilum fyrir, to render account for.
svara-bróđir, m. = svaribróđir.
svar-dagi, m. oath, promise upon oath (binda e-t -dögum).
svarđ-fastr, a. covered with sward (-fast land);
-lauss, a. without greensward;
-lykkja, f. a loop of walrus-rope;
-reiđi, m. tackle of walrus-hides;
-reip, n. a rope of walrus-hide (reip ţau er svarđreip heita);
-svipa, f. a whip of walrus-hide.
svarf, n. (1) file-dust; (2) a hard fray, broil, tumult (hann ríđr at í ţessu svarfi); (3) robbery, extortion (međ ránum ok svörfum).

svartr, a. (1) black (s. sem hrafn; s. hestr); (2) fig. baneful, disastrous (ţat svarta hallćrit mun koma).
svart-skeggjađr, a. black-bearded.
svá, adv. (1) so, thus; ertu Íslenzkr mađr ?—hann sagđi, at s. var, he said it was so; svá er sagt, at, it is told that; (2) joined with another particle, svá ... ok, both .. . and; s. starf ok torveldi, both toil and trouble; s. ráns-mađrinn ok okrkarlinn, the robber as well as the usurer; ok svá, and also, as also; sumarit ok s. um vetrinn, the summer, as also the winter; fögr augu ok s. snarlig, fair eyes and also sharp; (3) so, denoting degree (œrit mun hann stórvirkr, en eigi veit ek, hvárt hann er s. góđvirkr); Gunnarr spyrr, hví Njáli ţœtti ţetta s. úráđligt, why he thought this so unwise; ekki meirr en s., not more than so, so and no more; (4) followed by an adjective and 'at', s. ríkr, góđr, mikill, margir, fáir ... at, so mighty, good, great, many, few ... that; s. at, so that; kaldr (sjúkr) svá, at, so cold (sick) that; contracted 'svát', svát ek muna, that (so far as) I remember; with a gen., Hallfređr er svá manna, at ek skil sfzt, H. is such a man as I never can make out; hón er s. -kvenna (= hón er s. af konum), at mér er mest um at eiga, she is just such a woman as 1 most want; (5) svá.. . sem, as ... as; hárit var s. fagrt sem silki, as fair (soft) as silk; s. vel sem ţér ferr, well as thou behavest; (6) so, then (gengu ţeir norđr yfir hálsinn ok s. fram á Rastarkálf); (7) joined to an adj. or adv., about, pretty much; slíkar s. fortölur, somewhat such persuasion; ţat mun ţó s. nćr fara.,yet it will be just on the verge of that; nakkvat s., somewhat so; fegnir nakkvat (nökkut) s., rather glad; mjök s., almost, very nearly, all but (mjök s. kominn at bana).
svá-gi, adv. not so, nor yet (vildi eigi, at ţeir léti eignir sínar, svági konur eđa börn); -gort, -gurt, see 'sogörr'; svana, adv. thus.
svárka (ađ), v. to speak heavily; to complain, grumble.
