ristu-bragð, n. a runic character.
risu-ligr, a. lofty, stately (-ligr bœr); -ligr vexti, of imposing stature.
rit, n. (1) writing; einn dag er hann sat at riti, when he sat writing; (2) writ, writing, letter (gøra r.).
rita (), v. to write, = ríta.
rita-gørð, f. letter-writing, correspondence. Cf. 'bréfa-gørð.'
ritan-ligr, a. that can be written.
ritari, m. writer, transcriber, secretary (prestr er var ritari hans).
rit-fœri, n. pl. writing-materials;
-klefi, m. writing-closet.
ritning (pl. -ar), f. writing, writ.
rit-sending, f. letter-sending;
-stofa, f. writing-room, study.
ríða (ríð; reið, riðum; riðinn), v. (1) to ride, go on horseback (þeir brœðr riðu til alþingis); with dat. of the animal (r. hesti, vargi); of ghosts, r. húsum, skála, to 'ride' on the ridge of a house; with acc. of the road or the place; r. leið sína, veg sinn, to ride through brush and forest; r. eyrendi, to ride on an errand; (2) to break in, train (þat var siðvenja þeirra at r. hesta, temja bæði við gang ok við hlaup); (3) to move through the air; øxin reið at honum, the axe cam at him; reið at honum brúnássinn, down on him came the wall-plate; er upp reið gálga-tréit, when the gallows-tree was raised; (4) to reel, stagger (hann reið á ymsar hliðar); (5) r. upp, to rise (þeir fengu tekit hann við klif, er upp ríðr ór fjörunni); (6) miklu (litlu) ríðr um e-t, it is of great (small) importance; eigi þarf nú meira við, at fullu num þetta r., this will be quite enough.
ríða (ríð; reið, riðum; riðinn), v. (1) to twist, knit, wind; r. knút, to knit a knot; r. net, to work a net; r. knapp á e-t, to finish, wind a thing up; vera við e-t riðinn, to be concerned in, have to do with (verðr hann lítt við söguna riðinn); (2) to rub, smear (r. blóði á e-n or e-n blóði); ríða í, to rub into (r. kolum ok leiri í andlit sér); (3) fig., with dat., to thrash, flog; r. e-m um kinn, to buffet one; (4) to wring, press (mjólk sú, er riðin er ór seljubörk).
ríðari, m. = riddari.
rífa (ríf; reif, rifum; rifinn), v. (1) to rive, tear (þeir létu dýr ok hrafna r. hræin); r. klæði af sér, to tear off one's clothes; r. aptr, to rip up (Þ. vildi at aptr væri rifit sárit); r. ofan, r. niðr, to pull down; r. í sundr, to tear asunder; (2) impers. to be rent, give way (reif seglit).
rífka (), v. to mend, improve; er nauðsyn at r. ráð fyrir dóttur þinni, to mend her state.
ríf-ligr, a. good, fine, desirable.
rífr, a. good, acceptable (í gulli ok silfri eðr í rífum aurum).
rík-borinn, pp. high-born;
-dómliga, adv. magnificently;
-dómr, m. (1) power, might, magnificence; (2) wealth, riches;
-dœmi, n. = -dómr.
ríki, n. (1) power, might (ek hefi hafit þik til ríkis af litlum manni); veita e-m r., to grant one power; (2) rule, dominion (lagðist land allt undir r. Haralds konungs); (3) kingdom (fór konungr heim í r. sitt).
ríki-látr, a. imperious, lordly.
ríkja (-ta, -t), v. to reign (hann ríkti fjögur ár ok tuttugu).
rík-látr, a. proud;
-leikr, m. power, authority;
-lundaðr, a. imperious, severe;
-lyndi, n. imperiousness, severity;
-lyndr, a. = -lundaðr;
-mannliga, adv. magnificently;
-mannligr, a. magnificent, stately;
-menni, n. the mighty, the nobility.
ríkr, a. (1) mighty, powerful (r. höfðingi); r. ok auðigr, powerful and wealthy; ríkri (= ríkari) ráð sagði, the stronger had his way; (2) of things, strong (var þar ríkt varðhald); ganga ríkt, to prevail (lát þú eigi þá fæð svá ríkt ganga, at); leggja ríkt við, to lay a heavy penalty on; (3) magnificent (konungr gørði mannboð ríkt); (4) rich, wealthy (r. at fé).
ríku-liga, adv. (1) magnificently, = ríkmannliga; (2) strictly (hann hélt -liga guðs lög);
-ligr, a. magnificent (-lig veizla); -ligr maðr, a fine man.
