Lokka Táttur

The Saga of King Sverri of Norway

New Book and Article in Northern Way Books and Articles Section

Now up in the Northern Way Books and Articles section, is a book and an article by Bil Linzie. Bil's book, Drinking From the Well of Mimir, a detailed examination of the Germanic world-view is available for download in PDF format. Also available is Bil's article, Uncovering the Effects of Cultural Background on the Reconstruction of Ancient World-views. This article is a look at the difficulties of adopting a new world-view. Both the book and article should be required reading for all those interested in living Heithni, instead of playing at being Heithinn.

The Norse Discovery of America

Now up in the Northern European Studies section, we have, The Norse Discovery of America. This is a collection of texts relating to the voyages of the Norse west to America. A thousand years ago, nearly half a millennium before Columbus, the Norse extended their explorations from Iceland and Greenland to the shores of Northeastern North America, and, possibly, beyond. This volume from the Norroena collection contains all known sagas and documentary fragments which relate to this legendary exploration. Included are the Saga of Erick the Red and The Saga of Thorfinn Karlsefni.

GutaSaga

Now up in the Northern European Studies section, we have, The History of the Gotlanders (Gutasaga) dates to the 13th century, and survives in a manuscript c. 1350, Codex Holm. B 64 (Royal Library at Stockholm) along with the Gotland legal code, the Gutalag. It was written in the Old Gutnish language, the Norse dialect of the island.

Pow-Wows
25 March 2004
Now up in the Northern European Studies section, we have Pow-Wows, written by a Pennsylvania Dutch healer in the 1820s, this book is a rambling collection of rural home remedies and folk invocations. Pow-wow is a unique creole of Christian theology and a shamanistic belief system. It is still practiced in some rural areas of Pennsylvania. In spite of the name, it is not of Native American derivation. It is believed to have been brought over to America by German immigrants who practiced folk-magic.

The Works of Gildas

Now up in the Northern European Studies section, we have the works of Gildas Bandonicus, a British [i.e. Celtic] monk, who lived in the 6th century. In the 540s - in the most aggressive language - he set out to denounce the wickedness of his times. He ended up being the only substantial source which survives from the time of the Anglo-Saxon conquest of Britain, and the best source before the much more impressive work of the Venerable Bede [who completed his Ecclesiastical History of the English People almost 200 years late in 731].

For those wishing to live the Heithinn way, this book cannot be recommended highly enough. The book will also be of interest to those who wish to get a real picture of the Northmen, instead of the fanciful Hollywood caricature of Northmen as snarling barbarians. This book shows that the Northmen, whose contributions to our society are often overlooked, had a highly developed world-view and ethic that rivals that of any other culture. Against the Heathen

Now up in the Northern European Studies section we have "Against the Heathen" by St. Athanasius - Bishop of Alexandria; Confessor and Doctor of the Church; born c. 296; died 2 May, 373. Athanasius was the greatest champion of Catholic belief on the subject of the Incarnation that the Church has ever known and in his lifetime earned the characteristic title of "Father of Orthodoxy", by which he has been distinguished every since. His doctrines became the basis for the murderous crusades and inquisition.
